The Scaramouche Quartett, founded in 2008, has set itself the goal of performing works of the Viennese Classical period, from its roots in the mid-eighteenth century to Ro manticism, with a sound characteristic of that era. A collection of rare period instruments, using gut strings and tuned to A = 430 Hz, which was the customary "classical" tuning around 1800, gives the ensemble an unmis takable sound. The members of the quartet look back on many years of concert activity together in various ensembles, performing repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music. Werner Neugebauer, Firmian Lermer, and Det lef Mielke have formed a trio within the Hyperion Ensemb le for many years. Cornelia Löscher and Werner Neugebauer are long-time partners in the authentic performance of early music. The idea of devoting themselves to performing quartet literature on period instruments developed on the basis of shared esthetic convictions.
