1103 a big part of the district Voitsberg came by donation into the property of the monastery St. Lamprecht. A large and strategically important possession was thus in spiritual hand, probably also to the dissatisfaction of the government which wanted to know the center of the road Graz - Judenburg under its control. Thus the two Untervögte of St. Lambert decided in 1173 to build this castle and called it Vogtesperch.

1250 started, with the death of Emperor Frederick II, a terrible time without any holders. After the Habsburger came into power again, Obervoitsberg came back into the hands of the sovereign and was administered by frequently changing governors and holders. The constant change of ownership was the cause of the bad state. Finally in 1798 the castle was almost completely destroyed by a lightning strike.

The currently visible parts of the walls are mostly from the 14th and 15th century. From the 18th century on, the ruin was slowly collapsing, until the municipality Voitsberg took it over in 1910. From the ruin runs, along the east wing of the former city wall, a romantic footpath down to the city center.

The stage of the castle Obervoitsberg offers on multiple levels, the ideal backdrop for the performances of the castle-theatre. By means of trap doors and hidden staircases fantastic theatrical effects can be achieved.
