The Church of St Thomas on the “Tabor” – a row of houses constructed around the church as fortification – is the oldest preserved building, emblem and heraldic motif of the town.
The church, which is Romanesque at its core, was dedicated in 1188 to St. Thomas à Becket of Canterbury. Threatened by Turkish invasion, the “Tabor” was built in the 16th century to include a portal, round towers, encircling wall and a moat. At the end of the 17th century the fortification was taken down and a residential house was built. On the south side of the church, in the inner courtyard created by the “Tabor”, is impressive testimony to a Roman settlement on Weiz soil. The late Antiquity gravestones are from the 1st and 2nd centuries.
